Animation for health information

Health information has a particular problem. The people who most need it are often the least likely to sit down and read a leaflet about it. A short animated film can reach them where a leaflet cannot: in a waiting room, on a phone, at the end of a QR code on a poster.

We make patient education and public health animation in our Dublin studio. Our healthcare clients include the HSE and Benecol, and you can watch the films further down this page.

The HSE Psychology First series

The HSE Primary Care and Child Psychology Service had the clinical content already written. What they needed was a way to put it in front of people dealing with stress, low mood and loss who would never pick up a leaflet.

We made four animated explainers, in a general illustrated style rather than anything clinical or cold, built from scripts written by HSE psychologists. Alongside the films we designed the national campaign poster, with a QR code for each video so somebody in a waiting room can scan straight to the one that applies to them. The full story is in the HSE Psychology First case study.

Twenty seconds for Benecol

For Benecol we made a cholesterol awareness film for GP waiting room screens. It had to run silently, to twenty seconds flat including every fade, and to a brand specification with named typefaces, fixed weights and four approved colours. Every frame was checked against it before delivery. Read how in the Benecol case study.

What is different about healthcare animation

The script belongs to the clinicians. When psychologists or medical staff have written the content, we do not rewrite it to suit the animation. We design around it, and we flag where a line will be hard to show or will push the film over length, so your team can decide.

Accuracy beats flourish. Patients need to trust that the information comes from a real source. A consistent, restrained look helps with that far more than clever animation does.

Silence is normal. Waiting room and pharmacy screens rarely have sound, so we design for reading: short statements, held on screen long enough, at a size that works from across a room. Where a narrated version is also needed, we supply both.

Reviews take longer. Health projects usually go through clinical, communications and sometimes legal sign off. We ask for feedback consolidated into one document per round, and we plan the schedule around the review chain rather than pretending it will not exist.

Patient education video formats

We can supply the same film as a landscape video for websites and YouTube, a vertical version for screens and social media, a silent cut with on screen text, subtitled versions and versions in other languages. Pairing a film with a poster or leaflet that links to it, as the HSE did, is one of the most effective ways to get it watched.

Commissioning healthcare animation

We price from the final script word count, so the quote matches the film you get. Send us the script, even in draft, and tell us where the video will be shown. For the full range of what we make, see our video production in Ireland page, and for step by step clinical processes, whiteboard explainer videos are often a good fit.

Frequently asked questions

Will you change our clinical wording?

No. When the script is written by clinicians, the wording is theirs. We tell you where a line will run long or be hard to show on screen, but the decision to change it stays with your team. On the HSE series even the order of the videos was a clinical decision, and we kept it exactly as given.

Can the animation play in a waiting room with the sound off?

Yes. We built the Benecol film specifically for silent GP waiting room screens, carrying the whole message in on screen text sized and timed to be read at a distance. We can also supply a silent cut alongside a narrated version.

Do you make 3D medical or surgical animation?

No. We make illustrated 2D animation and motion graphics that explain health information to patients and the public. For detailed 3D anatomy or surgical procedures you would want a specialist medical visualisation studio.

Can you work with HSE IT restrictions?

Yes. On the Psychology First project we found that HSE devices block some file sharing services, which stopped the team watching drafts at work. We now plan review delivery around that before the first draft goes out.

Can patient videos be made accessible?

Yes. We can add burned in or separate subtitle files, produce versions in other languages, and keep text large and on screen long enough to read. Plain, calm narration helps too, and we choose voices with that in mind.

It was great working with Kieran. He quickly understood exactly what I was looking for.
