The brief

A building contractor about two years into trading came to us for a proper logo. He works across two trades, bricklaying and roofing and carpentry, and he was clear that he wanted both of them readable in the mark rather than a generic hard hat.

He also arrived with a reference image he liked, generated by an AI tool. A pitched roof over his initials, a window detail, the word CONSTRUCTION set between two rules.

The problem with the starting point

The reference was a picture of a logo, not a logo. It existed only as a flat raster image at one size, with no editable artwork underneath it. Blown up on a van it would have fallen apart, and there was no way to produce a one colour version for stamps, workwear or a sign.

We said that before taking the job rather than after. The idea was worth keeping. The file was not.

What we designed

We rebuilt the concept from scratch as true vector artwork and took it in four directions rather than presenting a single idea as a fait accompli:

  • The Apex, leading on the roofline
  • The Block, leading on the brickwork
  • The Truss, built around the carpentry
  • The Cornerstone, where the two trades meet

Every concept was drawn as outlined paths rather than live text, so the letterforms can never reflow or substitute on someone else’s machine. The typefaces used are licensed for commercial use, which matters on a logo and is the sort of thing that quietly causes trouble years later when nobody checked.

What was delivered

Sixteen vector files covering light, dark, single colour and reverse versions of all four concepts, plus high resolution PNGs for screen use and print ready vector PDFs. Enough that whichever direction he picked, he had every version a printer, a sign maker or a website would ask for.

Turnaround

Paid on a Monday. Four concepts with him on Tuesday.

Why it is worth reading

Most logo enquiries we get now include an AI generated reference, and that is fine. It is often a useful way of showing us what you are drawn to. What it is not is a finished logo, and the gap between the two is the job.
