Real client work
Ask most bands where their logo will be seen most and the honest answer is a black t shirt at the merch table. That is a good place to start band logo design in Ireland, because a mark that works in one colour on black will work almost anywhere else. Fine detail gets lost on fabric, gradients are not really an option, and every extra colour adds cost when the merch is made, so we draw logos that hold together as a single solid shape and add colour versions on top. Every logo is drawn from scratch for your band, never pulled from a template or a font menu.
Band logo design that works on a black t shirt
The same single colour thinking pays off on tote bags, stickers, patches and badges, where the mark might be a few centimetres wide. We check the logo at that size early. If the band name only reads when it is big, it needs simplifying before anyone falls in love with it.
Genre sets the rules, and sometimes you break them
A band logo tells a stranger what kind of music to expect before they hear a note. Metal has its spiky, symmetrical, almost unreadable lettering, and fans read that as a signal rather than a flaw. Indie bands tend toward plain type with an odd twist, or hand drawn marks that look like they came from a zine. Trad and folk groups often suit lettering with some warmth, sometimes with a nod to old Irish manuscript or signwriting, without falling back on shamrocks and Celtic knots. Punk, hip hop and electronic acts each have their own codes too. We work out which conventions to follow and which to ignore from your songs, your references and the bands you get compared to.
From gig posters to album artwork
The logo is one piece of a bigger visual world. It goes on gig posters around town and on Instagram, on the cover of each single and on the album or EP artwork. We design it to sit on top of an image without fighting it, and to be moved, recoloured or scaled down without breaking. Plenty of bands release several singles before a record, and consistent logo placement across those covers is what ties them together on a streaming release list. If you want help with the gig posters themselves, our poster design page covers that side.
On stage and on streaming
Live, the logo gets much bigger: on a stage banner behind the drummer, on the kick drum head, on amp covers and flight cases. Those are wide or round formats, so we check the mark in both and make sure it still reads from the back of a venue under coloured lights. At the other extreme, your Spotify and Bandcamp profile pictures are small circles, so a compact version, an initial or a symbol, often earns its place. For lyric videos, live clips and visualisers, an animated band logo gives you a short opening sting.
What you get when the logo is done
Once the design is agreed, you get files you can hand straight to merch suppliers, banner makers and whoever lays out your next sleeve: vector SVG, EPS and PDF, transparent PNGs, and colour, single colour and reversed versions so the logo works on black, white and anything in between. The files are yours to use however you like. You see concepts first and we refine them with your feedback, and our logo design page explains the process in more detail.
Send us the demo
We are a small studio in Smithfield, Dublin 7, working with musicians all over Ireland. Send a link to your music, a few bands whose look you like and where the logo needs to appear first, and tell us about your band for a quote.
Frequently asked questions
Can the logo go on t shirts, tote bags and stickers?
Yes. It is designed to work in a single colour first, so it goes onto fabric and stickers cleanly, and you get vector files that merch suppliers can use directly.
Our band name is long. Will it still work as a logo?
Usually. Long names can be stacked over two or three lines, set in a condensed style, or paired with a short symbol or initials for small spaces like streaming profile pictures.
Should a metal logo be readable?
It depends on your corner of the genre and where you want to be booked. Extreme metal fans expect dense lettering, but promoters and festival line ups need a name they can read, so we often supply a cleaner companion version for those uses.
How much does a band logo cost?
It depends on scope, such as the logo on its own versus a logo with a symbol, an animated version, or poster and single artwork. Describe what you need and you will get an exact price before work begins.
