White Space

White space — also called negative space or breathing room — is the empty, unoccupied area in and around a design. Despite its name, white space does not have to be white; it refers to any area of a composition that is free from visual elements, regardless of its colour. White space is not wasted space; it is an active and essential component of good design. In logo design, white space performs several critical functions: it allows the logo's elements to breathe and be perceived individually, it creates a sense of clarity and elegance, it directs the eye to the most important elements by giving them room to stand out, and it contributes to the logo's legibility by preventing visual crowding. Overcrowded logos — where every part of the available space is filled with content — feel anxious and are harder to read. Well-spaced logos feel confident, considered, and professional.
