Versatility

Versatility is a logo's ability to work effectively across all media, applications, contexts, and reproduction methods. A truly versatile logo functions as well embroidered on a cap as it does on a website, on a vehicle livery as on a business card, in full colour as in single-colour black. Versatility is achieved through thoughtful design choices: appropriate simplicity, bold and clean forms, legibility at small sizes, effectiveness in both colour and monochrome, and compatibility with a wide range of reproduction technologies. Versatility is not a given — it must be deliberately designed for. A logo created only with digital screen use in mind may face significant challenges when it needs to be reproduced in other media. Designing with versatility as a primary criterion from the outset produces logos that serve the brand effectively throughout its life, regardless of how its communication needs evolve.
