Typeface

A typeface is a family of fonts sharing a common design — a set of related letterforms designed with consistent visual principles, proportions, and personality. Helvetica, Garamond, Futura, and Times New Roman are typefaces. Each typeface typically includes multiple fonts: regular, bold, italic, light, condensed, and their combinations. Selecting the right typeface is one of the most important decisions in logo and brand design. Typefaces carry strong personality associations and cultural connotations that directly affect how a brand is perceived. A humanist sans serif such as Gill Sans communicates very differently from a geometric sans serif such as Futura, even though both lack serifs. For logo wordmarks, the typeface is often the starting point for the design, which is then refined, modified, or completely customised to create a distinctive and ownable typographic identity.
