Thumbnail
A thumbnail is a very small, quick sketch or digital preview of a logo concept. In the logo design process, thumbnail sketching is used during the initial ideation phase to explore as many ideas as possible in the shortest time. Thumbnails are intentionally small — roughly 2–5 centimetres in sketched form — which forces the designer to work at the level of overall form and concept rather than getting lost in detail. The constraint of the small scale also provides an immediate scalability test: if a concept reads clearly as a tiny thumbnail, it has strong potential for real-world use. Thumbnails are for the designer's eyes primarily; they are working documents rather than client-ready presentations. After generating a large number of thumbnails, the designer selects the most promising directions for refinement and digital development.
