Symmetry
Symmetry is a balanced arrangement where elements mirror each other across one or more axes. Bilateral symmetry — mirroring across a single vertical axis — is the most common type in logo design and creates a sense of stability, authority, and formal balance. Radial symmetry, where elements repeat around a central point, creates a sense of completeness and energy. Many of the world's most recognisable logos employ symmetry: the geometric regularity of the Target bullseye, the bilateral symmetry of the Volkswagen logo, the radial structure of many emblem and badge designs. Symmetry is not the only valid compositional approach — asymmetric compositions can create dynamism, tension, and modernity — but symmetrical logos tend to be particularly effective for brands seeking to communicate trustworthiness, balance, and institutional solidity.
