Sketch
A sketch is a rough, hand-drawn or quickly digitally executed exploration of logo ideas. Sketching is a fundamental and invaluable part of the logo design process. Before committing to vector artwork, working through ideas rapidly in sketch form allows a designer to explore a large number of concepts quickly, without the time investment of polished digital execution. The low commitment of sketching encourages creative risk-taking — it is easier to try unconventional or unexpected ideas when the effort required is minimal. Sketching also keeps the focus on form, composition, and concept rather than on technical execution and detail. Many professional logo designers produce dozens or even hundreds of thumbnail sketches before selecting a small number of promising directions for further development. The sketch phase is where the most important creative decisions are made, and investing sufficient time here pays dividends throughout the rest of the project.
