Silhouette

The silhouette of a logo is its solid outer shape, stripped of all internal detail — the form you would see if the logo were cut from black paper. A strong silhouette is one of the hallmarks of great logo design. When a logo's silhouette is distinctive and memorable, the logo remains recognisable even in contexts where detail cannot be seen clearly: at a distance, at small size, in low light, or when embossed or debossed. Testing a logo as a black silhouette is a useful design exercise that reveals whether the form has inherent strength and recognisability, or whether it relies entirely on internal detail and colour to communicate its identity. Logos with weak silhouettes often perform poorly in real-world applications; logos with strong silhouettes have a robustness and versatility that serves the brand across a wide range of media and conditions.
