Pixel

A pixel (short for picture element) is the smallest unit of a digital image — a single point of colour in a raster-based image. Raster images are composed of a grid of pixels, with each pixel assigned a specific colour value. The number of pixels in an image (its resolution) determines how much detail it can contain and how large it can be reproduced before visible degradation. For logo design, understanding pixels is important in the context of raster file formats (PNG, JPEG) and screen display. Unlike vector logos, which are mathematically defined and scale without quality loss, raster logo versions are fixed at a specific pixel dimension. Generating raster files from vector logos at the correct pixel dimensions for each intended use is an important part of professional logo delivery. At very small sizes, logos may need pixel-specific adjustments to ensure that vertical and horizontal lines fall precisely on pixel boundaries, avoiding the antialiasing blur that occurs when lines fall between pixels.
