Outline (Stroke)

An outline, also called a stroke, is the outer edge or border of a shape or letterform. In vector design software, strokes are applied to paths and can be controlled in weight (thickness), colour, and style (solid, dashed, dotted). In logo design, strokes can be used as a design element to create outlines around shapes or letters, adding definition, visual interest, or a retro aesthetic. However, strokes require careful management in professional logo production. Outline strokes in design software are applied to the centre of a path, meaning half the stroke width extends inward and half outward. When a logo is reproduced at a smaller size, a stroke that was set at 1 point at the design size may become proportionally heavier relative to the design. For this reason, many professional designers convert strokes to expanded, filled paths before finalising a logo, ensuring the stroke weight is fixed and will scale predictably.
