Optical Alignment
Optical alignment is the practice of adjusting elements so that they appear visually balanced and centred to the human eye, even when this means deviating from strict mathematical alignment. The human visual system does not perceive all shapes as occupying the same visual weight at equal measured sizes. A circle appears slightly smaller than a square of equal measured height; a triangle with a pointed top appears to float above a mathematically centred position. To correct for these perceptions, skilled designers make small, deliberate adjustments — extending a circular letterform slightly below the mathematical baseline, pushing a triangular element slightly above the mathematical centre of its container — so that everything appears visually settled and correctly positioned. Optical alignment is one of the less visible but most impactful skills in logo and type design, creating the difference between work that feels precisely crafted and work that, despite being mathematically correct, looks slightly off.
