Negative Space

Negative space is the empty area around and between design elements — as distinct from positive space, which is the area occupied by the elements themselves. In logo design, negative space is not simply empty or wasted space; it is an active compositional element that shapes how positive forms are perceived and can be used to create secondary imagery, hidden meanings, or clever visual concepts. The FedEx logo is the most famous example: the negative space between the 'E' and 'x' in 'Ex' forms an arrow, subtly communicating speed and precision. The WWF panda is defined almost entirely by the relationship between black positive shapes and white negative space. Effective use of negative space creates logos with depth and intelligence — they reward attention and create the sense of a design that reveals more the longer you look at it. Negative space also contributes significantly to the breathing room and visual clarity of a composition.
