Line Weight

Line weight refers to the thickness of strokes and outlines in a logo. It is one of the most fundamental and expressive variables in logo design. Heavy, bold strokes communicate strength, stability, and directness. Fine, delicate strokes suggest elegance, precision, or sophistication. The consistent use of a specific line weight throughout a logo creates visual unity — when strokes of varying thicknesses appear within the same design without clear intent, the result feels unresolved. Line weight must also be considered in the context of reproduction: very fine lines that look beautiful at large sizes can disappear or merge together when a logo is reduced to small sizes, or when it is reproduced by processes with limited precision such as embroidery or laser engraving. Logo designers must test their designs at minimum reproduction sizes and on different substrates to ensure line weights remain legible and intact.
