Leading

Leading (rhyming with 'heading') is the vertical space between lines of text, measured from the baseline of one line to the baseline of the line above or below it. The term comes from the era of metal typesetting, when strips of lead were physically inserted between lines of type to increase spacing. In digital design software, leading is typically set as a point value equal to or slightly larger than the font size — common default leading is 120% of the type size. Tight leading creates a dense, compact block of text; generous leading creates an open, airy feel that is easier to read over long passages. In logo design, leading is particularly relevant for multi-line wordmarks, taglines set beneath a logo, and address or contact information in brand stationery. Precise control of leading is essential for achieving a polished, considered result in any typographic composition.
