Hierarchy

Hierarchy is the visual arrangement of elements in order of importance. In logo design, hierarchy determines which elements the viewer notices first, second, and third. It guides the eye through the composition in a deliberate sequence that communicates the most critical information — typically the brand name — most prominently. Visual hierarchy is established through size (larger elements are perceived as more important), weight (bolder elements attract the eye first), colour (higher contrast elements are noticed before lower contrast ones), and position (elements at the top or centre of a composition tend to be perceived as primary). In a combination mark logo, hierarchy typically places the brand mark and wordmark as the dominant elements, with a tagline, if present, as a secondary element. In a complex brand lockup with multiple entities, hierarchy makes clear which entity is primary and which are secondary or subsidiary.
