Golden Ratio

The golden ratio is a mathematical proportion of approximately 1:1.618, often represented by the Greek letter phi (φ). It appears throughout nature — in the spiral of a nautilus shell, the arrangement of seeds in a sunflower, the proportions of the human body — and has been used consciously in art and architecture since antiquity. In design, the golden ratio is sometimes used as a compositional guide for determining proportions between elements: the size relationship between an icon and its container, the proportions of a logo's width to height, or the spatial intervals between elements. Some of the world's most recognised logos — including the Apple logo and the Twitter bird — have been analysed for golden ratio proportions, though the extent to which these were consciously applied varies. The golden ratio is a useful tool and reference point, but it should be understood as a guide that can inform design decisions rather than a formula that guarantees aesthetic success.
