Font

A font is a specific weight, width, and style within a typeface family. The terms 'font' and 'typeface' are commonly used interchangeably in everyday language, but in typographic terminology they are distinct. The typeface is the design — Helvetica, Garamond, Futura. The font is a specific version within that design: Helvetica Bold, Helvetica Light Italic, Helvetica Condensed. In the era of metal type, each font was literally a physical set of type at a specific size and style. In digital typography the distinction is maintained conceptually even though fonts are software files. For logo designers, understanding the distinction matters when working with clients, reviewing font licences, and specifying typography in brand guidelines. When a designer chooses a typeface for a logo, they must decide which specific font within that family — which weight, width, and style — best serves the design, rather than simply specifying the typeface family name.
