Flat Design

Flat design is a minimalist design style that avoids gradients, shadows, bevels, and three-dimensional effects in favour of clean, simple, two-dimensional shapes and solid colours. It emerged as a dominant design philosophy in the early 2010s, partly as a reaction against the skeuomorphic, heavily textured visual style that had previously dominated digital interfaces. For logo design, the flat design trend reinforced a broader movement toward simplicity and versatility. A flat logo works equally well on screen and in print, reproduces cleanly in one or two colours, and scales without any of the complications introduced by complex gradients or dimensional effects. Many established brands have simplified their logos over the same period — moving from three-dimensional or gradient-heavy designs to clean flat versions — motivated both by aesthetic fashion and by the practical demands of digital use across diverse screen resolutions and sizes.
