Exclusion Zone

Exclusion zone is an alternative term for clear space — the protected area of empty space that must surround a logo at all times. The exclusion zone is defined in brand guidelines and typically illustrated with a diagram showing the logo surrounded by a boundary, with the minimum distance from each edge of the logo to the nearest external element clearly marked. This boundary zone prevents competing visual elements from crowding the logo and undermining its impact and legibility. The exclusion zone measurement is usually expressed as a proportion of a specific element within the logo — for example, equal to the height of the capital letter in the wordmark — so that it remains proportionally correct at any scale. Respecting the exclusion zone is one of the most important and most commonly violated rules in logo usage. Even small incursions can meaningfully reduce a logo's visual presence and professional appearance.
