Emblem

An emblem is a type of logo where text is integrated inside a symbol, badge, or seal. Unlike combination marks where the symbol and text are separate elements, in an emblem they are inseparable — the text forms part of the containing shape. Classic emblems include the Starbucks circular badge and many university seals. Emblems convey authority, tradition, and institutional gravity, making them a popular choice for schools, government bodies, professional associations, sports organisations, and premium heritage brands. The main challenge with emblem logos is legibility at small sizes — because text is embedded within a containing shape and often set in a curve or at a small size relative to the overall mark, it can become difficult to read when the logo is reproduced below a certain scale. Professional emblem design must account for this by simplifying the design for small-scale applications or providing a separate, simplified version alongside the primary emblem.
