Display Typeface

A display typeface is a font designed for use at large sizes such as headlines, signage, and logos. Unlike text typefaces, which are optimised for readability at small sizes in long passages of copy, display typefaces prioritise character, personality, and visual impact. They often feature more extreme proportions, elaborate details, or unusual forms that would be illegible or distracting at small sizes but are striking and distinctive at large ones. For logo design, display typefaces are a common starting point for wordmarks, providing a strong aesthetic foundation that the designer may then modify and customise. The choice of display typeface sends strong signals about brand personality — a condensed gothic display face communicates very differently from a flowing calligraphic one or a geometric modernist one. When using a commercial display typeface in a logo, designers must ensure they have the appropriate licensing, and most professional designers will modify the letterforms sufficiently to make the wordmark unique.
