Counter

The counter is the enclosed or partially enclosed space within a letter. In the letter 'O', the counter is the space inside the circle. In the letter 'B', there are two counters — one upper and one lower. In letters like 'C' or 'U', the counter is open — partially enclosed but not fully closed. Counters are a critical component of letterform design and have a significant impact on legibility, character, and personality. In logo design, the treatment of counters can be used as a distinctive design element — enlarging them, modifying their shape, or introducing graphic elements within them.
