Counter
The counter is the enclosed or partially enclosed space within a letter. In the letter 'O', the counter is the space inside the circle. In the letter 'B', there are two counters — one upper and one lower. In letters like 'C' or 'U', the counter is open — partially enclosed but not fully closed. Counters are a critical component of letterform design and have a significant impact on legibility, character, and personality. In logo design, the treatment of counters can be used as a distinctive design element — enlarging them, modifying their shape, or introducing graphic elements within them. At small sizes, counters must remain open and unobstructed to ensure the letterform is legible. Custom lettering for logos often involves carefully adjusting counters to achieve a specific aesthetic while maintaining readability.
