Contrast
Contrast is the degree of difference between elements in a design. It can refer to differences in colour (light versus dark, warm versus cool), size (large versus small), weight (bold versus light), shape (geometric versus organic), or texture (rough versus smooth). Contrast is one of the fundamental principles of visual design, and in logo design it serves several important functions. High contrast between the logo and its background ensures legibility and visibility across a range of applications. Contrast within the logo itself creates visual interest, hierarchy, and emphasis — guiding the viewer's eye to the most important elements first. A wordmark that pairs a bold typeface with a lighter one uses typographic contrast to create rhythm and sophistication. Contrast between a geometric icon and an organic, hand-lettered wordmark creates personality through the tension between opposing visual qualities. Without sufficient contrast, a design feels flat, undifferentiated, and visually inert.
