Combination Mark

A combination mark is a logo that pairs a symbol or icon with a wordmark. It is the most common type of logo in commercial use because it offers flexibility and utility. The wordmark communicates the brand name clearly, while the symbol provides a distinctive graphic element that can eventually stand alone once sufficient brand recognition has been built. Combination marks can be designed with the symbol and wordmark side by side (horizontal lockup), stacked vertically, or with the symbol above or below the text. Brand guidelines for combination marks typically specify the approved arrangements and when each is appropriate. A key design challenge is ensuring that the symbol and wordmark feel as though they belong together — they should share consistent visual language in terms of weight, style, and proportions. The combination mark gives brands the best of both worlds: immediate name communication plus a distinctive graphic identity.
