Brand Guidelines

Brand guidelines are a document that specifies exactly how a logo should and should not be used. Also called a brand standards document or style guide, brand guidelines are one of the most important deliverables of any logo or identity project. They protect the investment a business makes in its visual identity by ensuring that the logo is reproduced consistently across all contexts and by all parties — employees, agencies, printers, partners, and licensees. A thorough brand guidelines document covers the logo and all its approved variations, minimum size rules, clear space requirements, approved colour versions, background restrictions, incorrect usage examples, the approved colour palette with values for print and screen, approved typefaces, and guidance on photography or illustration style. Some guidelines extend to cover tone of voice, iconography, layout principles, and application examples. The depth of the guidelines typically reflects the scale and complexity of the brand — a small local business may need only a few pages, while a multinational corporation may require a comprehensive multi-chapter document.
