Baseline
The baseline is the invisible horizontal line on which the main body of letters sits. It is one of several key reference lines in typography, alongside the cap height, x-height, ascender line, and descender line. The baseline is arguably the most important of these because it is the line the eye follows when reading — consistent baseline alignment across different letters and typefaces is what gives a line of text its visual stability. In logo design, when a wordmark combines different typefaces or mixed cases, maintaining consistent baseline alignment between all elements is essential for the composition to feel grounded and resolved. Optical corrections are often necessary: for instance, letters with flat bottoms such as H sit precisely on the baseline, while letters with curved bases such as O are typically extended slightly below it to avoid appearing as though they float above the line.
