Badge Logo

A badge logo is a style of logo where text and often a central graphic are enclosed within a containing shape such as a circle, shield, crest, or pennant. Badge logos have strong associations with heritage, craftsmanship, authenticity, and authority, which makes them popular with sports teams, breweries, educational institutions, travel companies, and premium consumer goods brands. The enclosed shape creates a strong silhouette that works well embroidered on fabric, embossed on leather, or printed on packaging. The challenge with badge logos is that they can become very detailed and intricate, which makes them difficult to reproduce at small sizes or in single-colour formats. Good badge logo design balances richness and detail at large sizes with a clearly legible simplified version for small applications. When a badge logo is also available as a standalone icon or wordmark, the designer typically creates a simplified version that strips away fine linework and small text.
